Bullying: A Harsh Reality

Everyday we are encountered with bullying. As students and adults, this is a problem that doesn't seem to go away. The new movie "Bully" is a documentary film that highlights the deeply rooted problems that victims of bullying suffer. We discussed bullying during our unit on persuasion, and watched many public service announcements geared towards raising awareness of the problem.

Watch the video trailer below for the movie "Bully" and leave your comments on the trailer. Feel free to discuss any emotions that you felt while watching the trailer. Then, answer the question: If you could give advice to a victim of bullying or to a bully, what would you say and why?

If i can give advice to a kid that's being bullied, i'd tell them to get help and do not be afraid of them, because that is what they want. Try to avoid and ignore them. and if they swing a punch at you, punch back harder to make a statement. For bullies, i'd say cut your crap and grow up or you're never going to be anything in life and only the lowest of the low bully and in adulthood bullying has no place in society. So don't do it.

  2. John B,

My advice to the kid is suck it up. Everyone gets pushed around at a new school, and if you are being bullied then you should talk to your counselor or parents before you kill yourself. Of course bullying is bad but seriosly killing yourself or hurting yourself just because some older kid is beating up on you is totally opposite to what you want.

If I had to say something to the bully. I would say, why are you doing this to this poor innocent person? What did they ever do to you? Why did you pick them? Ya'll know that it is just going to come back and bite you on the butt. While they are so smart and end up being doctor's and lawyer's. You all will let your grades slip and end up being fry cooks at McDonalds or something! It makes me just feel sorry those certain people that have nothing better to than to make other people feel sorry for themselves just to make yourself feel better!

If I had the chance to talk to a bully and see what they were doing someone, I would immediatly tell them to backoff and that bullying won't make anyone feel better about themselves. I would also ask why they decided to pick on that certain kid? Why did you have to choose that one kid to make them feel horrible about themselves that could lead them to do horrible things? I would say these things to a bully because I would really want them to put themselves in their shoes for a second and realize how much they are affecting that person. I would want them to think how horrible they've been acting and to make them stop right away.

I would say to a victim of a bully "Tell someone. Tell someone to help you. You are not alone. You can be happy again." My reasoning behind saying that is you can get through bullying, no matter how much it hurts. I know it is painful, but help will come if you ask for it. Don't be afraid. People are always bullied. The majority of kids are or have been bullied. Bullying doesn't help anyone and it can be ended.

My advice is for the parents of the children who committed suicide. I know after your child dies you feel really depressed and detached from the world, well try to talk to ppl. Tell ppl your story in order for them to learn what to do and what not to do if their child is being bullied. Your actions might have not saved your child's life, but u can save someone else's.

My advice to a kid that is getting bullied is to find a way to get over it. Have your friends help you beat the bully up or talk to someone about it that can help. Maybe even make friends with someone that is older and have him/her help defend you against the bully when he/she is bulling you. I would say no to commiting suicide because there is so much more to life than just being bullied at school and you know eventualy you will get away from thoose people who you do not want to be around.

If i had the chance to give advice to a bully i would without a doubt! Bullying is terrible and people who are bullying (bullies) are terrible! If i was giving advice to a bully i would start off by telling him how do you think it feels and is it really necessary. People commit suicide all because of it and all those bullies out there need to get that into there heads! They need to know how it feels every day to be laughed at and name called. They need to know that it's not easy and its for sure not funny. I would ask them why would you do those terrible things to just an innocent person and how does that make you a better a person? Bullying needs to stop and bullies need to back off.

I would tell the person being bullied to first see if they are really bullying you or just teasing. If it was really bullying, I would tell them to stay calm because if you get angry and try to fight them, things will just end up worse. They would also need to tell someone like a parent, teacher, principle, etc. For bullies, I would either confront them about it, or just go tell somebody older. Bullying can be prevented quite easily, as long as it is acknowledged and reported.

If I had a chance to talk to the victim of bulling, I would tell them to tell someone. Tell a responsible adult, teacher, or school counselor. I would also tell them that they are not alone. Tons of kids go through what they do every day, and they can be helped, and they too can live a normal life.

I would tell the victim to ignore and avoid the bullies and stand up for yourself. It doesn't matter what other people treat you or think of you. Life is about you not about them. You decide who you are going to be. It's just going to get harder and harder if you don't act. You need to stand up for yourself even if you are the only one. Show them that you're strong enough to get back up. No matter what happens, don't commit suicide because if you do, it's just going to show the other bullies how weak you are.

My advice is for the bully. You probably bully peoplle because maybe you have a hard home life, or your unstable. Im telling you that when you decide to call someone mean names, or throw a punch, think about what your doing. What did this person every do to you? You probably dont have a reason. Also, Think about the long term effects. Maybe your not bullying this kid physically, but mentally. Your words might hurt more then your actions. Think about this. How would you feel everyday of the rest of your life knowing that you caused a kid to kill himself.

When I watched this video I was really thinking of the bully's point of veiw. The bully also might be having a hard time at home with parents or with bigger bullies. My advice for that kid would be to get some help. If the problem is from inside home you could always ask the school counselor for help with anything. They are there to help you. Even if the problem is not at home you can still go to them. Maybe if they did this they would not feel the need to pick on someone else smaller than them.

If i had to give advice to a bully i would tell them that just because someone may be diffrent it doesn't mean you have to make them feel bad. And that you don't have to take your anger out on them it won't make you feel better about themselves or be cool with your friends. In the end i would tell them to stop so that nothing will happen to the kid who is getting bullied.

the only reason you bully others is to make yourself feel better. you just find other peoples flaws so that you can tell your self that u dont have as many problems as them, when deep inside you know you do.

If i had to say what emotions i felt, i would say that i felt sorry for the kid being bullied. I also feel sorry for the kids who took their life because of it. If i was going to give the kid getting bullied i would tell him to not get discouraged, that eventually things will get better.

If I had a chance to talk to the bully I would let him know what he is causing. Not only is he hurting the kid but the kid's family too. I would tell him to put himself in the kids shoes. Go home, do homework, cry yourself to sleep and just wonder what you ever did wrong. He eventually killed himself because of the pain. He thought it was all his fault he was this way. He was a perfect kid doing what he loved to do until you stepped in and it basically cost him his life. Now not only should you feel responsible for his death, but his family is broken. His mom is depressed and it was all because you wanted to feel better about yourself. It's terrible how some kids choose to act and these actions are just another form of selfishness and should be abolished as soon as possible.

My advice is to the bully. Why do you bully people? do you think you are cool or do you need to do it to make yourself feel better? my advice is to stop and get a life and get some friends. You don't know how it feels to get bullied so just stop.

If I had the opportunity to give a bully some knowledge on what he/she is doing, I would start off by saying that they're actions is just a burden to society. How could you physically, or even worse, emotionally damage a genuily good being and continue to live with somewhat of a dignity? You should realize that the things you do to get a sick pleasure from is slowly sucking the innocence out of someone. you need to stop!

I would explain to a bully that if you are bullying to get attention, keep doing it because soon enough the person you are bullying will have committed suicide, you will be in prison and be all over the news. If you need attention find people that you share things in common with and then will give you plenty of attention. If you are being bullied by someone else, you know how it feels so talk to someone about it and stop taking it out on other people and end the vicious cycle of bullying. If all else fails TALK TO SOMEONE there are people out there happy to help you but you cant be helped if they don't know you need help.
