Teens driving is a scary thought...well to me anyway! The facts show that Texas has the highest numbers of fatalities in the country related to teens behind the wheel. Watch the video below, and discuss whether or not you think the new changes that are being implemented are necessary, fair, and realistic.

ReplyDeleteI think that the new changes that could be made are safe but also unfair. I mean, waiting until you are 16 until you get your learners permit and then getting your license when you turn 18 seems like a long time to wait for someone who has been living with waiting until you are 16. And then just changing it right when we get close enough to even start taking courses! That just seems unfair! But, it would keep more people safer and less deaths in the state of Texas. So, I think that it would unfair to change the driving ages for our age division, but i also think that it would be a lot safer and protect more people.

ReplyDeleteI believe that the changes aren't necessary because with good driving, you need expierience. I don't agree that the laws are fair either because tripling the number of hours for training time won't do much for the young drivers because they'll feel confident enough to be out on the road with a little bit of practice. The more training time will only slow them down. As for realistic, I think that those laws are too strict, they seem pretty realistic, but raising the age that kids get their permits and licenses will only make the future generations of drivers even worse because of lack of expierience.
I think that these changes are not necessary but I think that if they are going to change the laws that you should at least be able to drive by yourself by 17 and have your permit at 15 1/2. I do think they are fair because we are not allowed to vote so it is not our decision. Realistically I think this could pass through congress because those voting will not be affected.

ReplyDeleteI think that receiving your learner's permit at sixteen instead of fifteen is unnecessary because it is just one year's difference. Receiving full driver privileges at eighteen when you're an adult is fair, because then you're less likely to do stupid things behind the wheel because you have more things expected of you. No texting or calls while driving, no driving between midnight and five AM is realistic because of the curfew and adults shouldn't be texting or being distracted in any way while driving.
John B,
ReplyDeleteOf course changing the driving age to 18 wont save lives. Expierience goes with the amount of time behind the wheel not age. To punish drivers for the acts of a select few is not fair or realistic, because they just need more expierience.

ReplyDeleteI think the new rules placed on drivers is very necessary. Having too many people in the car can be a distraction for the driver. Teens also don't need to be out late at night driving. I agree with the prevention of cell phone use while driving for people under the age of eighteen, but i believe this rule should apply to everyone. These rules are also very fair. Teenagers will still be able to have a friend in the car, and they will have friends who can drive too. Also, they will be able to stay out late with out passing the curfew. Cell phone use is a fair rule to the driver, but also the drivers around them. I think these rules are realistic because, they have a good time thats not to early for teenagers to be back home. They have friends that can drive so they can meet them places and take another friend. Also, cell phone use while driving is just not safe. I do agree with these laws and think they are necessary, fair, and realistic.

ReplyDeleteI think the new rules are very necessary. We shouldn't be losing so many lives just because we have too many young drivers. I'm not saying that I like the new rules, because of course, I want to start driving as soon as possible, but I don't want to be in danger everytime I drive on the road. So yes, very nessecary, but I dont think they're very fair. They're not fair for all the teenagers who are getting punished for the other young drivers who are irresponsible on the road. We should be trusted a little more, everyone gets in car wrecks, not just teenagers! I also think that they are very realistic. Half of them have already happened! Like, no texting or talking on the phone while driving, or spending more time getting prepared. I think eventually the driving age will go up. Maybe not anytime soon, but it will definetely happen with all of the deaths that have been going on, especially in Texas.

ReplyDeleteI think the one passenger under 21 rule is fair because the reason there are so many deaths is because the driver could be disctracted by his/her friends in the car. However even though Texas has the most deaths, it is also one of the biggest states. California had the second most deaths, and is a very big state too. So, it would be a good idea to do this everywhere. I think the midnight to five a.m. rule is also reasonable, because that would be the time where the most drunk drivers would be caught. I don't think they should change the driving age to 18 though. Just because some young drivers cuase accidents doesn't mesn that every young driver should be punished.

ReplyDeleteI believe these changes are necessary, fair, and realistic. While some teenage drivers are responsible, others are reckless. These laws would give more time for the driver to get comfortable and used to the idea of driving; and for them to possibly mature more. And, in my opinion, the chances of this law being passed are very high. Most of the people who disapprove of this law are too young to vote. Many adults greatest fears are teenage drivers, and if that is true, they would want to do as much as they could to delay it.

ReplyDeleteI think that the 1 passenger under 21 who is not in the family law isn't very fair, because the number of people inside the car is irrelevant to how the driver is distracted. It isn't very necessary or realistic, because it's not like teens who are driving are giving rides to more than 1 person on a regular basis. The midnight-5 AM rule is relevant and fair, but it isn't really necessary because most teens would probably get a ride from their parents if they were out somewhere between those hours. The texting and talking law is the most necessary, fair, and realistic out of the three, because it also should apply to adults. It would be ok to talk in the car, but texting should be illegal because it distracts all drivers from the road and is a serious accident waiting to happen.

ReplyDeleteI think that teen driving is a good experence for the teens and also a great chance to give the parents a break. Also I dont think that baning teen driving for all teens is fair just for the mistake of a very few other teens. It is not necessary to stop teen driving because some teens lossing their as my brother says "Ones mistakes is anothers experences" and I think that is true. My parents always say that they cant wait for me to drive and im sure my parents arent the only ones.
I think that this is not realist because all teens arent the same. Knowing tjat some may say that some many have been killed why would we want this to happen to any more teens well as I said before ones mistakes are anothers experences. My conclusion is that maybe the driving age should be raiaed to 17 if any changes are going to be made but dont just cut all aged teens from drivinf.

ReplyDeleteI think that the changes that had happened in that past, like no cellular activity while driving, were fair and were necessary. The drivers then may have not thought that is was realistic, but since then I bet that their minds have changed. The changes that the state are trying to make now are unfair, unrealistic, and unnecessary. Moving the driving age up to eight-teen will do nothing but cause there to be less drivers on the road. I think that they should hold that off for at least a decade or so. That should happen because then everybody already alive will not have to add two more years on to their countdown to driving, but the kids that will come when the law is enforced will not be surprised or dissapointed because they knew it was going to happen. Also even if they move the driving age up when you are eight-teen you will still be as experienced as when you were sixteen. Yes, not texting or talking on the phone until eight-teen and for the first year only being allowed to have one person in the car that is not part of your family or older than twenty-one are reasonable rules for driving. It does save lives and is fair, but raising the driving age to eight-teen..... there is no reason for than.

ReplyDeleteTo be honest, i think all of these rules being implemented are not really fair or realistic. For starters, how many of those teen related deaths where caused by ADULTS?! I don't see any stat on that! Also, a bunch of teens rely on those licenses to get to places like school, sports, home, and work. I feel that these rules are completely unrealistic simply because of how it blames teens for being irresponsible, when most of us aren't! Look you can't really prevent the irresponsible teens from being really stupid without barring the good teens from being drivers!

ReplyDeleteI think that the one passenger under 21 is a fair law because the driver can become distracted if there are alot of people in the car. The no driving between 12a.m. and 5a.m. is a fair law because teens who drive then are either drunk or really tiered. The no texting while driving until your 18 law is fair because it is just another way for them to get destracted. The only law I think is unfair and un realistic is the can't drive until your 18 law because teens getting into accidents isn't necessarily their fault. I thinkk 16 year olds are responsible enough to drive.
Lauren S.
ReplyDeleteChanging the driving age to 18 won't change anything teenagers will still get in accidents. They should not change the age of the driving age but maybe change some other things. They are not fair either cause what if your about to turn 16 and they don't let you get your licenes cause they changed the law. It is also not fair cause most people that are 18 act the same way they did at the age of 16.
Samantha M.
ReplyDeleteThe new changes that are being implemented are not necessary, fair, nor realistic . Like limiting the amount of passangers is not fair. It's not fair because it is not it is age it is in fact inexprerriance. lack of practice driving is what makes up a wreckelsss teen age driver. Every teenager is different. They are treating everyone like a statistic and over generalizing it.
Bond B.
ReplyDeleteI think all these rules are completely necessary. For starters cell phones+teenagers=perfect combination! These days teenagers are attached to their cellular devices and we could be easily distracted with them while driving, which is why that law is a great law! I also think making it illegal to drive between the hours 12 am- 5 am is also a smart law to make because lots of teenagers like to be out late with their friends or boyfriends partying or drinking which causes even greater risks of more car accidents! Im not saying that changing the actual driving age to 18 is the best thing in the world, but being 18 is a matured time in life and you are most likely to be much smarter, think wiser, and make better decisions rather than when your 16. Also there would be a lot less of pollution in the air, more conservation, and many people would save lots of money. I would rather wait to be older to drive than have a greater risk of my life possibly being taken at such a young age.

ReplyDeleteI Think Teens Should Drive With The Rules Adults Have Because They Only Showed Teen Death's Not Adults

ReplyDeleteI think these changes are not necessary, fair, and realistic. In my opinion its not the fact that teens get in more car accidents than adults because they are teens, but because they are a lot less experienced than a adult. If they raised the driving age it would not have a effect on how many accidents happen because if a 18 year old just got their drivers license they would be just as inexperienced as a 16 year old that just got their license. Also allot of accidents are related to drinking and driving so I think they should lower the drinking age to 14 so all of the teen drivers will know what the effects of alcohol are before the even get a license, not after. Also not to mention teens being able to drive helps family's out allot because they can help run errands for their parents, for example the parents cant pick up the younger child at the movies so instead the kid that can drive will pick up the child. So in conclusion, raising the driving age would not help prevent car accidents at all and would be completely useless

ReplyDeleteI think it is a good idea that you can't have another person who is not an adult besides a family member and you can't use your phone until 18, but I think they shouldn't raise the age to 18.
Chang B.
ReplyDeleteI don't think the "only one non-family passenger" law is fair because the amount of people on the car has nothing to do with car accidents. I also think raising the permit age and the driver's license age is unnecessary because age is just the number. Even if you're a thousand-year-old, if you are not experienced, you are just as unexperienced as a sixteen-year-old teenager. The new change is realistic because the state wants to reduce the amount of teen car accidents and also train them more before putting them on wheels.
Ana c.
ReplyDeletei think all of these rules are reasonable because we are the number 1 state of teen accidents so but at the same time i don't because its gonna take 2 years just to get your license. So i think its smart and stupid at the same time. You also don't want to be a sophomore and have your mom still drive you to school because that's really embarrassing.

ReplyDeleteI feel most of these rules are needed to improve the driving accidents. Rules like: no texting under 18, teenagers may not drive from midnight to 5:00. But there is an answer to the reason why Texas has the most car deaths, it's because are the biggest state therefor for we have the most people. However I feel the laws are necessary in today's society
